Pixlr Genesis: A NFT-Based Movement to Build the World’s Largest Decentralized Art Museum on the Metaverse

Pixlr – one of the world’s most popular design and photo editing ecosystems – announces the arrival of a brand new and intriguing project: Pixlr Genesis. The objective of Pixlr Genesis is ambitious but straightforward, as they aim to build a 100% decentralized art museum to rival the world’s largest institutions, such as the Louvre, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), or the National Gallery.

NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, have the art world in their grasp for over two years, with an upwards trend keeping course. Think of industry-leading art galleries such as Gagosian, Pace, or König launching NFTs in collaboration with their represented artists. However, on December 1 of this year (2021), Pixlr launches Pixlr Genesis founding a crowdsourced and decentralized art museum for digital art.

The NFT-based movement of Pixlr Genesis intends to empower creators and art owners to display a whopping 10.000 pieces of NFT artworks to the entire world in a crowdsourced museum. With an NFT exclusive pass, the holder can show one piece of art in Pixlr Genesis, access premium NFT art drops, NFT-related tools, and the opportunity to network with fellow art enthusiasts.

For this article, we will argue the revolutionary opportunities of an NFT movement, the need for a digital art museum, and Pixlr Genesis’ history to become the world’s largest decentralized art museum on the metaverse.

The NFT Revolution for (Digital) Art?

Since the turn of the millennium, Digital Art has become an established contemporary art form. However, as there is most often no physical art object, there was little to no value in digital art. But why? A Picasso’s value is not based on the material value of his paint or canvas but because of his skill, fame, and uniqueness. Think of the immensely valuable Picasso drawings that were simply made on a piece of a restaurant or pub coaster. So, why would the absence of a physical object with digital art result in a low or non-existent value, as it isn’t the physical material that dictates the value?

The answer lies in the scarcity of the artwork. When an artwork is unique, for instance, an oil painting on canvas by Picasso, there is value in the artwork because it is the only painting of this work by Picasso. With limited edition prints, the value drops, as there are multiple copies of this artwork. And with digital art, as there are no prints at all, there are infinite images on screens of the artwork.

But then NFT’s emerged. With NFTs, digital scarcity is created. The non-fungible tokens function as a certificate of ownership and as a certificate of authenticity (COA). When it comes to the value of an artwork, a digital work of art can be approached similarly to a physically unique work of art. This COA can be seen as a computer file existing on a blockchain. However, in contrast to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, NFTs are non-fungible, meaning their value is based on the highest bidder, as with contemporary art.

In short, NFTs offer the revolutionary opportunity for digital art to be approached in value similarly as we approach a painting by Picasso in the art world. At last! Digital art has been undervalued for too long. Now, as a creator, you can give your digital artwork a price tag and a chain of ownership instead of having no tangible value and being distributed entirely for free.

But one thing is still missing: a museum for digital art. Enter Pixlr Genesis.

Pixlr’s road to rivaling the Louvre, MoMA, and the National Gallery

In 2008, Pixlr was introduced to enable everyone to quickly create, edit and share images online. And successfully, Pixlr soon became one of the most revolutionary freemium platforms, including A.I. and machine learning, to improve content creation. In 2020, Stock by Pixlr was launched. It complemented the Pixlr ecosystem with exciting content within a premium subscription service.

And this year, in 2021, Pixlr Genesis will be launched on December 1, at 17:00 PST, or December 2, at 00:00 UTC. Pixlr Genesis is a joint project between Pixlr and Phosus, a technology-based company specializing in image processing and edition, A.I. and blockchain technologies. Phosus is an industry-leading software developer, with its core technology being adapted into products used by tens of millions of users every month. As a result, the collaboration of Pixlr and Phosus promises the right background and experience to establish a high-end digital art museum.

But what happens in or at a digital art museum? The ecosystem of Pixlr Genesis will redefine new boundaries of art and intellectual property. There will be a PIXLR Gallery, a decentralized art gallery for the ages, to showcase NFTs owned by the 10.000 members. There will be Pixlr Auctions, where you can auction your art piece in Pixlr’s FAIR system without the traditional high fees. Further, a PIXLR Masterpiece will be commissioned every six months based on the 10.000 art pieces on display.

Regarding NFTs, PIXLR Mint will allow members easy minting of NFTs within Pixlr Genesis to empower creators worldwide. Moreover, and arguably one of the most valuable aspects of the ecosystem, members can join and network with fellow art collectors and creators within the community.

Instead of using your museum pass, Pixlr Genesis uses its 10.000 exclusive passes. Each pass represents a choice on what to display – an NFT – how to invest secondary royalty funds, and where to focus the community’s attention. These passes will be sold over five phases. In each step, 2.000 NFT passes will be sold, ensuring the galleries are refreshed with new curators and works of art.

The benefits of purchasing a pass are varied. First, you become a patron of art within the strongly growing NFT space. Doing so, as a Pixlr Genesis NFT pass holder, you can play a critical role in nurturing the second Renaissance of art. Also, you acquire a one-of-a-kind NFT. All passes and NFTs are unique and manually signed with a personal attribute increasing the rarity of your pass. Each has a cryptographically hashed connection to the next NFT. Further, your exclusive pass gives you Premium Access to new community airdrops for other collections. Last but not least, you will also have access to some exclusive tools of Pixlr to create NFT-based experiences.

Additionally, your pass also offers PIXLR Grants, in which 25% of all Pixlr Genesis NFT secondary royalties in perpetuity will be reinvested in acquiring new art and building platforms to support contemporary artists to grow the Pixlr Genesis Collection, as with the collections of traditional institutions. With the future community drops, multiple collections will be worked on for the future drops to owners of Pixlr Genesis. These collections will be dropped within 24 months after the release in December 2021.

It is clear to say the digital art museum offers a unique and immersive experience. With Pixlr Genesis, you become an essential part of a decentralized museum by bundling forces and contributing to the digital Renaissance of an NFT movement. By doing so, Pixlr Genesis will rival the Louvre, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), or the National Gallery.
